GoodRx | Condition Hubs

The Health team began an initiative to design new condition hubs to summarize key health information related to a particular condition, link out to condition articles, and drive readers to GoodRx resources. Sponsors can purchase premium ad space on the Condition Hub and all articles within the same parent topic.

DISCOVER

Before starting the design process I completed a competitive analysis for direct competitors to determine what health information, resources, and features users find valuable. Using this, we could determine how to make our product stand out among competitors and increase value with both users and clients.

Understanding our competitors

Understanding our users

Additionally, we ran an initial unmoderated user research study with 24 users on UserZoom to gather insights into what users find valuable when looking for health content, which informed our design decisions and process.

DEFINE

Who are we designing for?

I created four user personas to focus and inform our design decisions and further empathize with our GoodRx users. Meet Ariana, Scott, Cailyn and Abby!

I also created four journey maps based on the personas to determine areas of opportunity and growth. These have been adapted to be used across GoodRx Health.

Moving forward

Our research informed us of a few clear insights to keep in mind as we began the design process:

There are multiple opportunities to place sponsored materials to elevate our partnerships without being disruptive to the reading experience.

Users want to easily access health information and resources to alleviate their immediate concerns.

Opportunities to stand out include an FAQ section, references, a table of contents, and an elevated visual design.

Align the visual design with the rest of the health pages to reinforce brand identity and create consistency across our product.

DESIGN

The design process

We went through multiple iterations of designs focusing on branding, navigation, and page layout. We also explored the use of custom illustrations for our top 20 most popular conditions. We ultimately tested and moved forward with a sticky horizontal navigation and a two column desktop layout, where the right rail is utilized for sponsored articles and ad placements.

Testing our designs

Before beginning development we ran an unmoderated user on UserZoom with 24 total participants, 12 on mobile and 12 on desktop. Similarly, 12 users tested designs for an Allergies condition, and the other 12 tested with Type 2 Diabetes. Some of our key findings were:

Users love the new horizontal navigation. They found it to be intuitive, user-friendly, and modern. Most users instinctively used the navigation to jump to a specific section on the page while testing.

Users loved the new designʼs look and feel, and thought the illustrations were modern and fresh.

Consider working with the personalization team to display an informational Good Rx unit for new users, and medication prices for returning users.

We know that users researching more complex conditions are eager for additional content. There is an opportunity to position our hubs as industry leading comprehensive guides for complex conditions.

Final designs

2023

After months of research, designing, iterating, and engineering, our Condition Hubs went live! The final designs included a sticky navigation menu, a two column layout to promote sponsored content, and an updated medications module that is dependent on where a user is in their health journey in order to provide a more personalized experience.

2026

As GoodRx evolves, the design team has been working to establish an updated visual design framework to strength our brand image and guide further designs. As part of this initiative, the condition hub pages underwent a design update. This refreshed look and feel is more bold, sleek, and playful. This is under development with engineering and will be productionalized by Q2 in 2026.
